Darn Blimps was a multiplayer Minecraft server that existed between 2011 and 2012, which mashed up survival mode with a post-scarcity economic model, allowing players to work if they chose to and play when they wanted to.
This allowed for a unique blend of creative and survival mode, where the creatively-oriented could construct grand temples and sprawling cities if they were willing to build them; while the rugged survivalists could still live off-the-grid and fight for their meals.
Although relatively short lived, it was a fairly large and active community for much of its existence, and is still talked about to this day.
